Aberystwyth’s Two Beaches
Aberystwyth has two distinct beaches divided by the castle headland. They are different in character, facilities and awards status — the choice between them depends on what you are looking for.
North Beach
North Beach is the main town beach — the long arc of sand running from the Royal Pier northward to the Craig Glais headland, with the Victorian promenade alongside it. It is the most central and most visited beach, with the Royal Pier at its southern end, beach huts, an Edwardian bandstand and lifeguards on patrol during summer. The promenade above the beach stretches for over a mile and is Aberystwyth’s main walking and cycling route.
North Beach holds the Seaside Award — a recognised quality mark for beaches, though a step below Blue Flag. Water quality is generally good.
Dog rules: Dogs are banned from North Beach between the Landing Stage and Craig Glais from 1 May to 30 September. Dogs are welcome outside those dates and hours.
South Beach
South Beach is quieter and sits between the castle headland and the southern end of South Marine Terrace. It holds a Blue Flag award — the highest international beach quality standard, awarded for water quality, facilities, safety and environmental management. Lifeguards patrol in summer.
The beach is overlooked by the castle ruins and the Old College building, giving it one of the more dramatic settings of any beach in mid-Wales. It tends to be less crowded than North Beach, especially outside peak summer weeks.
Dog rules: Dogs are banned from South Beach between Castle Headland and the first groyne at the end of South Marine Terrace from 1 May to 30 September.
Further Along the Coast
Clarach Bay is a small sandy cove two miles north of Aberystwyth — quieter, more sheltered and dog-friendly year-round. Reachable on foot over Constitution Hill or by road.
Borth is a long, exposed sandy beach 8 miles north, with a famous submerged prehistoric forest visible at low tide and a good surf break. Ynyslas, at the northern end of the Borth beach, is a National Nature Reserve with dunes, estuary birds and a distinctly wild character.
Practical Notes
Lifeguards: Present on both North and South Beach during the main summer season. Always check RNLI lifeguard coverage dates before swimming with children.
Parking: Seafront parking is available along the promenade. South Beach is accessed from South Marine Terrace. See the parking guide for car park locations and charges.
Facilities: Toilets, cafes and beach hire are available on and near North Beach. South Beach has fewer facilities — the town centre and promenade cafes are a short walk away.
