Aberystwyth Royal Pier
Aberystwyth Royal Pier stands at the southern end of North Beach, jutting out into Cardigan Bay from the promenade. It is one of the few Victorian seaside piers still standing in Wales, and one of the shorter examples — around 242 metres — but its position at the end of the promenade makes it a natural destination on any seafront walk.
History
The pier was built in 1864–65, making it one of the earliest pleasure piers in Wales. It was designed as a landing stage as well as a promenade attraction, and received steamers carrying Victorian tourists from Bristol and Liverpool. Storm damage, fire and the decline of coastal steamer services gradually reduced its commercial role, but it survived while many of its contemporaries across Wales were demolished or left to decay.
The pier has been partially closed and structurally repaired at various points in its history. Its current condition and the extent of what is open to visitors varies — check before visiting if you are planning specifically around it, as access to the full length has not always been guaranteed.
The Pier Today
The landward end of the pier includes amusements and a bar. The pier extends out to sea giving views back along the promenade and the town, and north towards Constitution Hill and the Cliff Railway. Fishing from the pier end is a regular activity. At night the pier is one of the more distinctive features of the seafront — lit against the dark of the bay.
Pier nightclub takes its name from this location and is the main nightclub in Aberystwyth for students and locals, typically open at weekends.
Visiting the Pier
The pier is accessed from the southern end of the promenade. It is a natural stopping point on the walk from the town centre to the promenade and back. The views from the end — looking back at the curved bay, Old College, the castle headland and the hills above the town — are some of the better views in Aberystwyth.
