Aberystwyth has a year-round events calendar driven by the university, the Arts Centre and a strong independent culture. The following covers the main annual fixtures and venues.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre

The Arts Centre on the university campus is the main events venue in town, running a full year-round programme: theatre, live music, comedy, film festivals, gallery exhibitions and community events. Flagship annual events include:

Aberystwyth Comedy Festival — held on the first weekend in October, with around 100 individual shows across multiple venues, featuring TV comedians, Edinburgh Fringe acts and new talent. One of the most established comedy festivals in Wales.

International Ceramics Festival — biennial event at the Arts Centre, with international ceramic artists demonstrating techniques on stage, lectures, masterclasses and kiln firings in the grounds. When it runs it is one of the most significant ceramics events in Europe.

Abertoir — Wales’ International Horror Film Festival, held annually at the Arts Centre. A specialist programme with screenings, Q&As and events.

Wales One World Film Festival — documentary and world cinema programme at the Arts Centre.

Music

Aberystwyth Musicfest is an international summer music school combining concerts, recitals and masterclasses, with the harpist Catrin Finch serving as artistic director. It draws students and performers from across the world and its public concerts are open to visitors.

Aberystwyth Music Festival presents concerts and recitals at historic and scenic venues across the area, covering a wide range of musical styles. A separate event from Musicfest, typically running in the spring or autumn season.

University Events

Aberystwyth University drives significant visitor traffic at specific times of year. Open Days (autumn and spring) bring families of applicants; Graduation weeks in summer fill accommodation and restaurants across the town. If you are visiting for non-university reasons, checking the university calendar in advance is worthwhile — these periods affect parking, restaurant availability and accommodation prices.

The university’s Arts Centre is also the main public-facing cultural venue for the institution and runs events that are open to non-students throughout the year.

Seasonal & Community Events

The Aberystwyth funfair is an annual fixture in November. Regular farmers’ markets operate in the town centre. The annual fireworks display over the bay is a significant local event. Check Discover Ceredigion (discoverceredigion.wales) for current community event listings and dates.
